The Brisbane Greeters will showcase the stories, colourful characters, heritage sites, hidden secrets and unique public artworks that make up these historic precincts during the new tour in South Brisbane and West End.
The Greeters program offers free walking or public transport orientation tours – known as “greets” – around Brisbane. As the Greeters walked the new route for the first time, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said it was a fitting way for the city’s 200 ambassadors to celebrate their birthday.
“Brisbane Greeters are the friendly faces of our welcoming city, orientating visitors, delegates, international students and migrants to Brisbane,” Cr Quirk said.
“The Greeters help promote Brisbane through free greets that showcase all our city has to offer, including our rich history, cultural diversity and world-class facilities. Since I launched the Greeters program in 2012, our friendly ambassadors have welcomed more than 60,000 visitors to Brisbane.”
Cr Quirk said the Greeters continued to introduce greets that resonated with visitors and residents alike; the popular Walter Taylor Bridge tours have seen 6000 visitors to date.
“You’ll see the Greeters supporting major events and programs such as the BrisAsia Festival, World Science Festival Brisbane, City Anzac program, Regional Flavours, Paniyiri Festival, Eat Local Week, Ekka, Quandamooka Festival, Asia Pacific Screen Awards and many more,” Cr Quirk said.
“They will even get into the spirit of the Commonwealth Games this April by launching eclectic ‘British Greets’. The Greeters also help us put out the welcome mat to VIPs, including world leaders during the 2014 G20 plus visiting mayors, foreign dignitaries and government officials, while offering tailored experiences and volunteer support to major conventions and conferences.
“Our Greeters are well-recognised for the work they do, consistently being rated number one on TripAdvisor for tours in Brisbane and last year receiving gold at the Queensland Tourism Awards for ‘Most Outstanding Contribution by a Volunteer Group’.
“I wish the Greeters all the best for their sixth birthday and hope they continue to put their best feet forward.”
