The Flight Centre (FLT) Global Headquarters at South Bank’s Emporium are due to launch at the end of October 2016. After years of design and preparation, the anticipation will soon be over with the world-class facilities at the Southpoint development opening to the public in a matter of weeks.

The Headquarters will include a unique, modern open plan commercial office space including a roof top cafeteria and bar. Along with the exclusive use of a Wellness and Gymnasium and End of Trip facilities provided to all staff. FLT chief operating officer Meanie Waters-Ryan said the company’s new headquarters would eventually house close to 2000 people. “Our aim is to consolidate our Brisbane city head office operations, which are currently divided between leased properties at 545 Queen Street and 316 Adelaide Street,” Ms Waters-Ryan said.

Located on Grey Street between Vulture and Tribune Streets and adjacent to rail and busway stations, Southpoint will be one of the largest mixed-use, transport-oriented development (TOD) projects in Queensland. Flight Centre will be the sole commercial tenant for the building, allowing the base of the global company to make the space its own.

Each floor will be themed around a different aspect of travel, providing inspiration for staff within the business. Meeting rooms and quiet rooms will be designed to replicate plane cockpits, London buses, cruise ships, boats, beach huts and more, providing an engaging workplace for staff that encourages innovation, motivation and enthusiasm. “Southpoint has great appeal from many perspectives and we look forward to relocating to our new corporate headquarters when our current lease expire in 2016,” Ms Walters-Ryan said.

The primary circulation spaces include sculptural stairs and a slide connecting the floors to activate the core of the building. The ‘Campus Style’ open plan layout aims to encourage easy adaptation and collaboration between the various divisions of the company. Along with numerous breakout spaces, this design creates a vibrant and cohesive working community that fosters greater teamwork between company teams. Communal spaces such as the cafe, social hub spaces and meeting rooms are concentrated around the edge of the facilities. This will create a high level of transparency and visual connectivity.

Environmentally sustainable design initiatives will create a work environment that maximises both staff comfort and operational efficiency. With a 5-star Green Star rating for design from the Green Building Council, the 1700 metre squared headquarters will have direct access to the upgraded South Bank train station and Southpoint’s new retail and dining precinct. Aspects of the building will be open 24 hours a day, allowing for extended trading and business hours. Located in the heart of Brisbane’s cultural and lifestyle precinct, the Global HQ will have 360 degree views of South Bank’s scenery, along with easy access to South Bank Parklands and the retail and dining services in the area.

Externally, the visually striking feature facade of the facilities will be specifically designed to reflect the movement and play of the sunlight mirrored off the Brisbane river over the course of the day. Enhancing the buildings visual appeal, the HQ will add innovative architecture to the South Bank streets.
