The Australian Independent Booksellers, members of Leading Edge Books, has announced its shortlist for the 2018 Indie Book Awards, for the best Australian books published in 2017.

Now in its tenth year, the Indie Book Awards recognise and celebrate Australia authors, and the role independent booksellers play in supporting and nurturing Australian writing.

The 24 books shortlisted for the Best Titles of the Year were nominated by the independent booksellers themselves, and will compete for the overall Indie Book of the Year Award for 2018.

A panel of expert judges (all indie booksellers and avid readers) will choose the winners across six categories – fiction, debut fiction, non-fiction, children’s, young adult, and illustrated non-fiction.

Independent booksellers from around the country will then vote to select their favourite book from the six category winners.

The Indie Awards differ from other literary awards because they are chosen by independent booksellers who are renowned for their love of books and reading, support new and emerging Australia authors and foster a love of quality writing.

Past winners have gone on to be bestsellers and win other major literary awards.

Shortlisted author, and last year’s Indie Book of the Year winner Jane Harper says Australian independent booksellers breath a vitality into the industry that is hard to find elsewhere in the world.

“Independent booksellers and their passion for Australian writing are the reason so many readers have discovered my books,” said Jane.

Winners will be announced on Monday 26 March.
