Community spirit and celebration of life on wheels cycled down Boundary Street for the 11th annual Kurilpa Derby and Beggars Banquet on Sunday 2 September.

This year’s event was the largest Kurilpa Derby to date, with a plethora of floats surrounding the streets with colour and creativity. Many of the residents banded together to create street floats, or decorated their preexisting two and three wheeled bicycles and skates. For the first time this year the event featured the Ibis “Bin Chicken” DJ Chariot from locals who raised more than $2000 to create the float. Favourite races of the day included the Martini and famous Squid race, which managed to delight and disgust the crowds.

The community celebrated the Kurilpa Derby until late in the evening with dining, dancing and festivities on the street at the 4th annual Beggars Banquet. Guests of the event said “it is magical to be surrounded by friends and neighbours sharing a meal – especially keeping a place at the table to welcome new friends to join.” The event featured spectacular and mystical performance from Theatre of Thunder and a flash dance.

The Kurilpa Derby is a celebration of life on the non-motorised, where the community comes together to clear a space on the busy streets of West End to enjoy themselves for the day. The event has been conceived, nurtured and delivered each year by volunteers from the West End Community Association, focusing on residents coming together to celebrate the West End community, their pride, and being inclusive to all.
