One of the world’s top ballet companies Teatro alla Scala will come to Brisbane for the first time in its 240 year history, performing exclusively at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). The November 2018 event will feature an extensive program celebrating Italian arts and culture. Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company will perform two iconic stage classics, Don Quixote and Giselle, with music performed live by Events Queensland.

Giselle is the quintessential classical ballet, which continues to thrill audiences with its tragic love story. Don Quixote will bring audiences a bright and enchanting Spain replete with gypse dances, fandangos, matadors and windmills. The show will be simulcast to regional Queensland including Mount Isa to Maryborough through the QPAC’s satellites. Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch said it was incredibly exciting to have 75 international acclaimed dancers from the company come to Queensland. “Teatro alla Scala has a long history of working with the world’s best dancers, choreographers and creatives,” Ms Enoch said.

Since 2009, the QPAC International Series has welcomed the world’s finest performance companies and with approximately a third of audiences traveling from outside of Brisbane, this event has contributed more than $20 million to the Queensland economy. QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas said Teatro Alla Scala in Brisbane was something worth traveling for. “This is a rare opportunity for audiences to see a ballet of an exceptional quality … the history and success of previous QPAC International Series’ have enabled QPAC to attract interest from some of the most significant performing arts companies to appear exclusively in Brisbane,” Mr Kotzas said.

Minister for Tourism Industry Development Kate Jones said Teatro alla Scala would be a strong drawcard for the 2018 QPAC International series. “This event has become a highlight in Queensland major event calendar. Attracting this level of international talent exclusively to Queensland cements our States reputation as a vibrant cultural destination,” Minister Jones said.
