Manish Singh knows there are two secrets to happiness: wine, and learning how to enjoy it. That’s why the Changing MindSpace
founder has launched Winefulness, a class that combines Italian wine tasting with an introduction to mindfulness. The event will take place on Friday, 9 June, from 6.30 to 8.30 PM at 1889 Enoteca in Wooloongabba, and attendees will have the chance to sample eight wines and nibble on Italian fare in the restaurant’s enchanting wine cellar.
This won’t be your average wine tasting. Rather than discussing the nuances of notes and legs, the class will instead help you focus on paying attention to what you’re drinking. Just as traditional mindfulness programs emphasise the sensory aspects of an experience, this will hone in on where the wine is from and how it tastes, smells, and looks.
The evening will begin with a Prosecco, advancing through three white wines, three reds, and a final dessert Moscato accompanied by antipasti including bresaola, aged prosciutto, and a selection of vegetables. Thanks to Enoteca’s diverse selection of Italian varietals — more than 90 per cent of its offerings aren’t available anywhere else in Brisbane — attendees will be able to experience a wide range of familiar and idiosyncratic options. Expect glasses to range from neutral grapes to those complex and unexpected. The final white will be an orange wine, while the final red will be natural, broadening your palate and helping you develop tools to live a happier, stress-free life.
The class will integrate the wine with lessons in mindfulness, using the tasting to practice
strategies to gain calm and inner peace while dealing with home, work, and general stress.
“You’ll taste beautiful Italian wines and get some real information about them, but you’ll also walk out the door feeling because you’ve gained skills that you can use to deal with stress and to help you feel better in daily life,” said Singh.
If you’re unable to make June’s event, there will be plenty of other opportunities in the future. Singh hopes to expand to whiskey tasting, gin tastings, and collaborations with some of Brisbane’s notable, innovative chefs.
Tickets are $125. Book online at www.changingmindspace.com.
