Brisbane has secured a new cycling festival commencing in 2019 which will build on the legacy of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and deliver a multi-million dollar boost to Queensland’s economy.

The Brisbane Cycling Festival will be a major three week, multi-discipline event that will feature professional, amateur and mass participation events at the celebrated Anna Meares Velodrome and other venues from 26 March to 14 April 2019. Some of the world’s best track cyclists will descend on Brisbane for the internationally-renowned Six Day Series, which combines elite track cycling with an energetic party atmosphere. Cycling Australia will host the Track National Championships and National Road Series The Classics, showcasing Australia’s elite and emerging cycling talent.

Minister for Tourism Industry Development Kate Jones said the deal, secured via Tourism and Events Queensland in partnership with the Brisbane City Council via Brisbane Marketing and Cycling Queensland, was a great win for Queensland. “Queensland just hosted a raft of cycling events during the Commonwealth Games and this new event is a great opportunity to again showcase the state-of-the-art Anna Meares Velodrome – one of the great pieces of infrastructure left behind as a legacy of the Games,” she said.

Residents and visitors can take part in a mass-participation ride across the city to showcase Brisbane as a world-class major event and cycling city. Amateur cyclists are encouraged to make the most of the city’s extensive network of bikeways and shared pathways, and enjoy the weather and hospitality Brisbane and surrounds has to offer. Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said securing the Cycling Festival was a huge coup for Brisbane. “Brisbane has already demonstrated its ability to host world-class sporting events, and the Brisbane Cycling Festival will be the latest in the city’s major events calendar,” Cr Quirk said.
