The Australian LGBTI Awards took place at Sydney’s The Star on Friday 2 March, with Joel Creasey, Magda Szubanski and Bindi Irwin just some of the LGBTI community leaders and allies to win awards.

Winners at the Awards included pioneer activist Peter De Waal, who took home the Lifetime Achievement Award; Netflix serial Orange Is the New Black won the Public Award for Film, TV, and Web Series; the Marketing Campaign Award went to Airbnb; and SBS took out the Brand Award.

The event was hosted by SBS presenter Patrick Abboud, and included attendees such as Orange Is the New Black’s Yael Stone and Danielle Brooks, Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warior Princess) and comedian Jordan Raskopoulos.

Australian LGBTI Awards Director Silke Bader congratulated the award winners, expressing pride for the community.

“These past months, it’s been amazing to finally start to see some traction towards equality, opportunity and fair treatment for all,” said Silke.

“Such great strides would be impossible without their tireless contributions.”

More than 11,000 nominations were received across 16 categories for this year’s Awards, including Celebrity of the Year, Sports Personality of the Year, Celebrity Ally, Brand and Marketing Campaign, Community Initiative/Charity and Inspirational Role Model.
