This week this little blogger was lucky enough to pick the brains of Peter McWhirter, Managing Director of Scotch & Soda Australia.

Peter tells me about the brand’s design philosophy, gives an insight into his day-to-day as Managing Director and talks about the Fall/Winter ’14 range from Scotch & Soda.

Allie: Can you tell me a bit about the Scotch & Soda brand, its background and origins?

Peter: Though Scotch & Soda has been around since the ‘80s, our Amsterdam-based fashion brand as we know it today was established in a brave new beginning in 2001, when three new owners joined their broad experience and shared the love of making great garments.

After Scotch & Soda was re-launched for Spring-Summer 2002, Scotch Shrunk was added for Spring Summer 2008. This success was soon followed by the launch of our women’s collection, Maison Scotch with Little sister brand R’Belle showing up for Spring Summer 2011.

Allie: What is Scotch and Soda’s design philosophy?

Peter: Scotch & Soda products are rich in detail, high quality and affordable. The designers at Scotch spare no effort or expense in the detailing and fine-tuning each garment, all the way to the neatly finished interiors and trims. We invest in the product, which is typically inspired by classic and vintage styles, enriched with a wealth of inspiration from around the world.

Allie: Can you tell our readers about your role at Scotch & Soda and what an ordinary day typically involves?

Peter: I’m not sure I have “ordinary days” but that’s the best part of my job. My role is to grow and develop the business, seek new opportunities for Scotch and Soda and ensure everything we do, across all facets, grows and strengthens our brand DNA within Australia.

Allie: Can you tell us a little bit about the Winter ‘14 range and what you love about it?

Peter: Our Fall-Winter 14 collection goes for a well-worn tailored look. With warm colours for the colder months, as well as beautifully hand-painted patterns and prints, all designed in-house at our offices on the Amsterdam canals. The special details and treatments that Scotch and Soda is known for, reach new heights this season incorporating playful dip dyes and tie-dyes as well as indulging non-denim fabrics in rich denim treatments and washes. This gives the garments a unique, worn-in look with a comfortable feel, whilst keeping an overall tailored aesthetic.

Allie: What makes Scotch & Soda unique in the marketplace, in your opinion?

Peter: Scotch and Soda is dedicated to creating collections that tell a story and connects with people. From the moment you step foot in a store, you will see the subtle influences of Morocco, Japan or Miami. Look closer and you will see the love and attention put into treatments, washes and trims. I believe there is a depth to our brand that keeps us a step ahead of our competitors and that’s what makes Scotch and Soda unique.

Thanks to Peter and the Scotch & Soda team for lending their time to me this week!

Until next week…

Allie
