The Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Best of Movie Music can only be described as a feast for the eyes and a trip through the decades. Even those who do not typically see themselves as orchestra aficionados can be enchanted by some of cinema’s most loved soundtracks, performed by a stellar group of musicians who have dedicated their lives to their craft.

Led by Guy Noble, conductor and musical entertainer, guests were invited to join the exciting adventures of Lawrence of Arabia, and don armor for the battle in Gladiator. Old favourites like Thurderball, and newer hits from Red Dog were just some of the tracks performed with gusto by the ensemble. And with highlights from Wallace and Gromit, Star Wars, Harry Potter and more, there was something everyone could be whisked away by.

Guy, who has a long standing history with the Orchestra, delighted guests not only with his musical talents, but with his humour. Perhaps surprisingly, he had the auditorium abrupt with laughter between the haunting melodies. Even coming out to perform the penultimate song in a certain villain’s costume from a multi-billion dollar series. Without revealing everything, it suffices to say he replaced his baton with a red plasma sword. Finished, he quipped “god, it was hot under that thing”.

Returning to the classics, the 50 or so ensemble performed the theme from The Man from Snowy River with the utmost respect. Again seen when soloist Sarah Butler took centre stage for John William’s With Malice Toward None from Lincoln.

Overall, QSO’s Best of Movie Music was a sensational Sunday morning treat. It livened the spirits of guests on a grey and rainy morning, and left them wanting more. And with such an effervescent host, they are sure to come again.
