One of Brisbane’s fastest emerging theatre companies Underground Broadway has launched its new hit rock musical Spring Awakening at the Sue Benner Theatre in Brisbane – and fans are already raving. The musical is based on the controversial 1891 play of the same title by Frank Wedekind, centering around teenagers who begin to discover the inner and outer tumult of human sexuality.

Spring Awakening is a Tony Award winning rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The characters inner thoughts are told through an alternative rock score. The play centres around controversial taboo topics including murder, suicide, teen sex and depression.

Audiences have stated that it is wonderful to see musical theatre production company that gives emerging artists a place to showcase their talents. Melchior Gabor is portrayed by Harrison Aston, starring alongside a strong cast, who give a powerful performance of coming of age.

Spring Awakening will run until Sunday 2 September.
