In The Bolshoi, Julia is a young provincial girl from a poor family performing in the streets of a mining town. Her big break comes when former ballet dancer Pototsky sees her potential and takes her to the Moscow State Academy of Choreography to audition. Julia’s new life is an exhilarating rollercoaster. She must overcome the challenges set by her teachers, provoked by their own personal struggles.

Julia is incredibly talented. She can become a great ballerina. But she must give up everything: her family, her first love, friendship. Her only ally in this maze is her mentor, Beletskaya, who instils in her students an inspiring willingness to succeed. This is a captivating coming-of-age-story about a group of ballet dancers striving to be selected to perform with the Bolshoi Theatre Company.
