The State Library of Queensland (SLQ) will honour Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sporting heroes at its Our Sporting Greats: Murri and Ailan athletes in the spotlight showcase from 24 March to 2 September 2018. Sporting greats to be included in the exhibition include Uncle Charlie King the President of the Brisbane Natives Rugby League team, bodybuilding gold medalist Rhonda Purcell, two time Olympian Danny Morseu, Cherbourg Marching Girl Aunty Lesley Williams, and Queensland track and field champion Willie Prince.

These athletes and “unsung heroes” from the sporting world are admired for their talents and determination to succeed and will be honoured as champions for their enduring efforts as community advocates. The SLQ showcase celebrates their contribution to sport and the community with images, memorabilia and digital stories.

Showcased at the exhibition is the historic images of the Cherbourg Marching Girls where memories from respected elder Aunty Lesley Williams form the lens and will tell a story of true grit and determination. The national phenomenon of competitive marching appealed to young Cherbourg women during a time where organised sport for girls and women was limited and opportunities to leave the settlement were rare and tightly controlled.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch speaks proudly of the exhibition and encourages visitors to embrace the SLQ showcase. “On the eve of the Commonwealth Games, I encourage visitors of all ages to embrace this exhibition that showcases the commitment and endurance of these trail blazers in the sporting arena and within our communities,” she said.
