St Laurence’s College will begin year-long celebrations commencing Friday January 30 as the South Brisbane all-boys school reaches its 100 year milestone.
The 2015 celebrations will reflect the theme of Celebrating the Past, Living the Present, Building the Future. Events will include the 100th Anniversary Mass, special sporting events, cocktail functions, concerts, blessings, a gala dinner, a reunion weekend for Old Boys and more.
St Laurence’s College Principle Ian McDonald said he was looking forward to celebrating these events with the community. “We will celebrate yearlong with merriment and reflection in gratitude of those that have carried on the college values and traditions before us,” he said. “By hosting these events we will take our congregation on a journey to see the significant progress and instil a sense of pride and belonging to what we have created today.”
Celebratory events include a Civic Reception to be held at Parliament House, with select delegates in attendance. A strong drawcard for the sporting community will be the Rugby 1st team playing at Suncorp Stadium as a pre-curser match to the Queensland Reds. A Centenary concert will provide a fun-filled family event as music students showcase a variety of music genres from the past century. Mr McDonald will also launch the much anticipated history book ‘It’s Good for Us to Be Here – the Story of St Laurence’s College’, which includes some historical content on the South Brisbane area.
St Laurence’s College began in 1915 by five Brothers teaching 270 students. Today, the school has grown exponentially with more than 200 teachers and staff, almost 1800 students and increasing facilities, with the new chapel expected to be unveiled in November.
