Debuting at the La Boite Roundhouse Theatre from October 14 to 31, Sunnytown explores the journey through a 13 year old’s subconscious.

Dubbed an Australian Alice in Wonderland, Sunnytown tells the story of Danika Hart’s 13th birthday. Celebrating with her dysfunctional family, she is attacked by an exploding cake and a glimmering episode that takes her to a world too close to home to be an escape, and too far away to be safe.

The play, written by recent NIDA Screenwriting graduate Krystal Sweedman, questions why people attempt to cope rather than instigate change. It deals with the fragilities and complexities of family conflict – from an adolescent’s point of view.

Playwright Krystal Sweedman describes the process of writing Sunnytown, “It took many drafts for the play to settle into its shape. I wanted Sunnytown to explore the link between childhood trauma and addiction, while showcasing a character who manages to escape these shackles. However as a lover of theatre’s ability to transcend reality, I’ve attempted to share this story in the most magical, poetic way possible”.

Sunnytown features a stellar cast of Brisbane actors including Caroline Dunphy, Ron Kelly and emerging actors Olivia Hall-Smith and Vanessa Krummenacher.
