Twelve local doctors at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital have broken the World Record  for the fastest team to run one million metres, in the final time of 71 hours and 44 minutes, smashing the previous record by 11 hours, finishing on Friday 19 October. The doctors used the record attempt to support the Million Metres for Melanoma foundation, raising more than $300,000 for the charity which will be used to build a new melanoma unit at the hospital.

The Million Metres for Melanoma foundation was founded by Queensland Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Chris Conyard, who lost his 31-year old sister-in-law to aggressive melanoma and has been on a mission to help raise funds to support individuals and families during their fight against melanoma. The team was training for nine months in preparation for last week’s event, with the previous 2002 World Record held by a professional running team from England.

This is not the first world record the team has broken. In April 2016 the doctors broke the world record for the fastest team to row one million metres on an indoor rowing machine.
